Laval Micro-Topping Floors Without Tear-Out
Patched, stained, or otherwise compromised concrete slabs get a second life under a thin polymer-modified overlay. The micro-topping bonds directly to the prepped substrate, creating a fresh, seamless surface in millimetres rather than inches. From there, any finish, polish, stain, or sealed, goes down cleanly. No slab replacement needed.
- Avoids costly slab tear-out and disposal
- Seamless, uniform finish ready for any top coat
- Written estimate and firm completion date
Overlay, not replacement
Why Choose Micro-Topping Over Tear-Out
Not every damaged slab warrants removal. When the concrete is structurally sound but visually compromised, patched in odd places, surface-worn, or too inconsistent for direct polishing, a micro-topping becomes the practical answer. It bonds to the existing slab and creates a new, uniform surface without the cost and disruption of a full replacement.
The overlay is engineered to accept any finish. Most homeowners choose polished concrete for its durability and sheen, but stained finishes and sealed surfaces work equally well. The topping itself is just the base layer, measured in millimetres, that makes the slab suitable for whatever aesthetic you want above.
The line between "fixable with a topping" and "needs tear-out" is structural. If the slab heaves, has deep moving cracks, or shows base failure, the topping cannot solve that. We walk the space, assess the damage, and tell you which category your slab falls into before any work begins.
Installation sequence
The Micro-Topping Application Process in Laval
-
Slab evaluation and finish planning
We inspect the concrete for structural soundness, identify any cracks or repairs that need attention, and confirm what finish will sit on top of the topping. This determines the prep strategy.
-
Mechanical profiling and priming
The slab surface is ground to open the pores and create mechanical bond. Any necessary crack repairs are made, then the manufacturer-specified primer is applied to ensure the topping adheres properly.
-
Topping application in thin lifts
The polymer-modified material is trowelled on in successive thin passes, each one building the thickness while maintaining a tight bond to the substrate. The result is a smooth, sound new surface.
-
Finishing, curing and top-coat prep
The topping is burnished to the desired texture, allowed to cure on schedule, then the final finish (polish, stain, or sealer) is applied. The entire system cures as one integrated floor.
Finish options
Choosing Your Floor Finish Above the Topping
The micro-topping is the foundation, not the final look. Most Laval homeowners select polished concrete because it delivers a hard, reflective surface that hides nothing and requires minimal maintenance. The topping takes the polish beautifully, creating a seamless appearance.
Alternatively, acid or water-based stains can be worked into the topping for warm, layered colour. A clear sealer over the stain protects the finish and gives it a satin or matte appearance depending on your preference. For homes planning radiant floor heating, the underlayment installs beneath the topping, and the entire stack, heat tubing, topping, and finish, functions as one integrated system.

Micro-Topping Questions Answered
Thickness, structural limits, finish compatibility, and what to expect during installation.
Old basement slab was patched and ugly. They micro-topped it then polished, and now it reads as a brand-new floor without the tear-out and mess of a replacement.
Saved us a slab replacement on the main floor. Micro-topping plus stain plus seal gave us exactly the look we wanted, and the existing slab is hidden underneath.
Knew the answer when they walked in, micro-topping was the move because of how patched our slab was. Done in less than a week and the new floor looks seamless.
Combined with heated floor underlayment underneath. The radiant heat warms the topping evenly and the finished floor is exactly the same look top to bottom.
