Laval Commercial Retaining Walls, Footing to Cap

Grade shifting under a parking lot or building pad is a site problem, not just a wall problem. Laval Concrete sizes the footing, ties the rebar and installs drainage before a single block or cubic metre of concrete goes in. New builds and failing-wall assessments both start with a free written estimate.

What makes it structural

Poured or Block, Why Commercial Retaining Walls Need Engineering

Parking lots, building pads and access roads all sit on grade that has to go somewhere when the site is cut. A commercial retaining wall is what keeps that grade in place, and the loads pressing against it, loaded delivery trucks, full parking rows, saturated soil after a heavy rain, are nothing like what a backyard garden wall ever faces.

That gap in load is why commercial walls are engineered from the ground up. The concrete footing is calculated for the height of the wall and the surcharge sitting above it. Rebar runs through the full depth of the pour or through cored block, and a granular drainage layer with weeping tile is placed behind the wall before any backfill goes in. Skip the drainage and water pressure does the rest, slowly.

Laval Concrete builds both cast-in-place poured concrete walls and engineered block walls. Which one fits a given project depends on the height, the available site access for forming or block delivery, and whether the finished face needs to match surrounding decorative commercial concrete or blend into a utilitarian site concrete layout. Either way, the structural logic is the same: footing first, reinforcement through, drainage behind.

How Laval Concrete Sequences a Commercial Retaining Wall

  1. Site and load assessment

Before any concrete is ordered, we measure the retained height, map the slope and identify what sits above the wall line, parking, a building pad, a loaded access road, so the footing and rebar schedule reflect the real surcharge.

  2. Footing excavation and pour

We cut to undisturbed bearing soil, set forms and pour the concrete footing to the engineered dimensions. The footing is the anchor; undersizing it is the most common reason commercial walls eventually lean.

  3. Wall construction and reinforcement

For poured walls, forms go up, rebar is tied to the footing dowels and concrete is placed and consolidated in lifts. For block walls, each course is laid, cores are filled and vertical rebar is grouted through to the footing.

  4. Drainage installation and backfill

A granular drainage layer and perforated weeping tile are placed against the back face of the wall before any soil goes back in. This step is non-negotiable, it is what keeps hydrostatic pressure from building up behind the concrete over time.

Reading the signs early

Laval Commercial Wall Repair, What the Lean Is Telling You

A commercial retaining wall that has started to tilt, show horizontal cracking near mid-height, or push out at the base is not just an aesthetic problem. Whatever the wall holds, a row of parked vehicles, a loading approach, a building foundation, is now at risk of losing its grade support. The longer the movement continues, the more concrete and soil have to be removed and replaced rather than stabilised.

Most failures trace back to one of two causes: hydrostatic pressure from water that had nowhere to go, or a footing that was never sized for the actual load above it. Laval Concrete starts every repair assessment by identifying which one (or both) is at work, because patching the face of a wall without fixing the drainage or the base just delays the next failure. For walls that have moved only slightly, stabilisation and drainage correction can be enough. For walls that have shifted significantly under heavy surcharge, rebuilding to a proper engineered spec is the honest answer, and we say so plainly rather than selling a patch.

Our repair work on commercial walls follows the same sequencing as new construction: drainage corrected first, footing addressed, then the wall itself. See how that approach carries through to our parking lot repair and residential retaining wall repair work as well. For a straight assessment of a wall that concerns you, call or use the estimate form, we will look at it and give you a written finding, not a sales pitch.

Common questions

Commercial Retaining Wall Questions, Plain Answers

Surcharge loads, engineered drawings, drainage and repair decisions for commercial retaining walls in Laval.

Scale and load. A commercial wall holds back the grade under parking, building pads and access roads, so it carries far heavier surcharge loads and is engineered, footed and reinforced for them, not built to a residential rule of thumb.
Usually, yes, especially for height and surcharge. We build to engineered drawings for the footing, reinforcement and drainage, and can coordinate the engineering as part of the project.
Almost always water pressure or an undersized footing. Without drainage behind it, water builds up and pushes the wall over time. Commercial retaining wall repair addresses that cause, not just the visible lean.
It depends how far it has moved and what it is holding up. A wall caught early can sometimes be stabilised; one that has shifted badly, especially under parking or a building, is safer rebuilt. We give a straight engineering assessment.
Yes. We build cast-in-place poured walls and engineered, cored-and-reinforced block walls. We recommend one based on the height, the load, the site access and the finish the project needs.

★★★★★

Engineered wall holding back the grade under our new parking lot. Footing, rebar and drainage all to the drawings. A year in, dead straight.

★★★★★

Our old wall behind the building was bulging. They proved it was a drainage problem and rebuilt it with the footing it should have had.

S. R.
Property manager
★★★★★

They coordinated the wall engineering and built it to spec without us managing it. Tied cleanly into the site grading and parking.

G. K.

★★★★★

Straight assessment that our leaning wall had moved too far to patch, given it held up the access road. Rebuilt right, no shortcuts.
