Shower Waterproofing Built with Laticrete Systems

When tile meets water in a Laval bathroom or wet room, the membrane underneath decides whether the assembly stays dry for decades or fails within years. We install Laticrete Hydro Ban and 9235 waterproofing with matched underlayments, all specified and installed as one integrated system. Free written estimate on every project.

The assembly that lasts

Why Laticrete Waterproofing Matters

Tile and stone failures in wet areas almost never start at the surface. The real culprit is what sits beneath: a substrate that isn't flat, a membrane that isn't bonded, or incompatible products stacked on top of each other. Laticrete solves this by engineering the entire assembly as one system.

Hydro Ban liquid membrane and the 9235 fabric-reinforced option both seal the substrate and accept tile or stone set into a Laticrete thinset that bonds chemically into the membrane. Below that, a matched Laticrete underlayment gets the substrate flat and ready. No layer boundaries, no brand mismatches, no warranty gaps.

This same one-system thinking guides our Sika waterproofing and Mapei floor installs. When you choose Laticrete, you're choosing an assembly that was engineered to work as a whole, not a collection of products hoping to get along.

Installation sequence

How Laticrete Waterproofing Gets Installed

  1. Assess the substrate and wet-area use

We evaluate the substrate condition, the specific wet-area application (shower, wet room, below-grade), and any movement or detailing challenges to decide between Hydro Ban liquid and 9235 fabric-reinforced.

  2. Prepare and level with underlayment

The substrate is cleaned and prepped, then a matched Laticrete underlayment is applied and floated flat. This creates a sound, level base for the waterproofing membrane to bond to.

  3. Apply the membrane at full thickness

Hydro Ban or 9235 is applied to the manufacturer's specified thickness, with all seams, corners and transitions detailed and sealed. Flood testing is performed where the assembly requires it.

  4. Set tile into Laticrete thinset

Tile or stone is set into a Laticrete thinset mortar that bonds chemically into the membrane below, creating one continuous waterproofed assembly from substrate to finish.

Two membranes, one family

Hydro Ban Liquid vs. 9235 Fabric-Reinforced

Hydro Ban is the liquid-applied waterproofing membrane that works for most shower and wet-room applications. It's fast to apply, bonds directly to the substrate, and accepts tile set into Laticrete thinset. For straightforward wet areas, Hydro Ban is the standard choice.

The 9235 fabric-reinforced system adds a woven reinforcement layer at corners, movement joints, and complex transitions where liquid membrane alone can't handle the stress. We specify 9235 when the assembly has tight corners, multiple drains, or structural movement that demands extra durability. Both are part of the same Laticrete family, so underlayments and thinsets bond the same way. See our Sika waterproofing page for another approach to wet-area sealing, or explore basement waterproofing for below-grade applications.

Common questions

Laticrete Waterproofing Questions Answered

Hydro Ban vs 9235, tile assembly waterproofing, and matched underlayments in Laval.

Hydro Ban is a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane for showers, wet rooms and below-grade tile assemblies. It seals the substrate, then tile or finish sets into a Laticrete thinset that bonds into the membrane.
The 9235 fabric-reinforced system adds reinforcement at corners, movement joints and detailed transitions where liquid alone is not enough. We pick based on the specific assembly.
Usually yes. A matched Laticrete underlayment brings the substrate flat and bonds chemically to the membrane above, removing the layer-boundary failure mode you get from mixing brands.
Yes. Hydro Ban and 9235 are designed for shower assemblies and are widely specified for wet rooms, with proper detailing at drains, corners and curbs as part of the install.
We install Laticrete systems to the published manufacturer spec, with primer, membrane and tile-setting products from the same family, so the warranty is intact and the assembly performs.

Hydro Ban under our new shower tile. Watertight, properly detailed at the curb and drain. Two years in and not a single grout-line stain from leaks.

They installed the full Laticrete chain, underlayment, membrane and thinset. One system, one warranty, no finger-pointing between brands.

★★★★★

9235 fabric-reinforced waterproofing for a tricky wet-area detail. Done right at every corner and seam, exactly the assembly the spec called for.

They walked me through why all-Laticrete made sense instead of mixing products. The tile job has been dead solid since.
