Tile-Shower Waterproofing with Laticrete Hydro Ban & 9235
When a tile shower or wet room needs a waterproofing membrane, Laticrete Hydro Ban and 9235 are the systems tile installers specify. We apply the membrane to engineered thickness, coordinate the matched Laticrete thinset and grout, and hand off a fully cured substrate ready for tile. The whole assembly stays under one warranty path when every layer is Laticrete.

System integration
Why Tile Installers Specify Laticrete Waterproofing
A tile shower is only as dry as its waterproofing membrane. Laticrete engineered Hydro Ban and 9235 to work seamlessly with Laticrete thinset and grout, so when all three layers are Laticrete, the tile installer's warranty covers the whole assembly. Mix brands at any layer and the warranty path breaks.
Hydro Ban is the standard choice for residential showers and tubs. It applies as a liquid, cures quickly, and changes color from teal-blue to olive as it hardens, giving us a visual QC check. Spots that haven't changed color get a second coat before the tile installer arrives. For balconies or heavier wet exposure, we use 9235, which is rated for traffic-bearing applications.

Installation sequence
How Laticrete Waterproofing Gets Installed
-
Assess the wet-zone scope
We review the tile layout, drain locations, and exposure level to determine whether Hydro Ban (standard residential) or 9235 (heavy-duty or balcony) is the right fit, then coordinate with the tile installer on the matched thinset and grout.
-
Prepare substrate per spec
The concrete or substrate is cleaned, cracks and joints are sealed with compatible material, and corners and transitions are detailed to Laticrete spec so the membrane adheres fully.
-
Prime and apply membrane
The Laticrete primer is applied first, then the membrane (Hydro Ban or 9235) is rolled or sprayed to engineered thickness. Hydro Ban's color shift from blue to green confirms full cure and complete coverage.
-
Verify cure and hand off
Once the membrane has fully cured and color-verified, the substrate is ready for the tile installer to apply Laticrete thinset and begin the tile layout, keeping the whole system under one warranty.
Built-in quality control
The Color-Change Cure Verification
Hydro Ban's shift from teal-blue to olive-green as it cures is not just a visual indicator, it is a built-in quality-control tool. We use the color change to confirm that the membrane has reached full cure strength and that coverage is complete across the entire wet zone. Any spot that has not changed color gets a second coat before we hand off to the tile installer.
This color-coded verification catches incomplete coverage that a visual inspection alone might miss. It is one reason tile installers prefer Laticrete: the system itself tells you when it is ready. Pair this with Laticrete crack-isolation membranes if substrate movement is a concern, and review our full brand selection for complementary repair and waterproofing products.

Common questions
Laticrete Waterproofing Questions, Answered
Hydro Ban vs 9235, tile-system warranty, color-coded cure verification.
They installed Hydro Ban to spec, color-cured properly, ready for my thinset. Whole-Laticrete path warranty intact. The system discipline matters.
Tile shower with Laticrete waterproofing under tile install. Three years dry, no recurrence of the leak issues the previous tile job had. Right system.
The color-coded cure was the difference. Spots they would have called done were still uncured; the second coat fixed it. Real install QC.
Tile install warranty path stayed clean because they installed Laticrete waterproofing under Laticrete thinset under Laticrete grout. Whole assembly warranted.
