Tile trade standard

Why Tile Contractors Specify Mapei Underlayment

Tile installers request Mapei self-leveling underlayment because the system warranty path is clear and the product chemistry is proven. Ultraplan works for thin-to-moderate depth applications; Novoplan handles thicker pours and structural specifications. The Mapei primer bonds the SLU to the substrate permanently. Using a different primer or skipping primer breaks the bond and voids the warranty.

We install Mapei SLU as a Mapei specialist. We confirm the right product for your depth with the tile contractor, apply the matched primer, mix and pour to Mapei specifications, and cure on schedule. The substrate is then ready for the tile installer to warrant their work on top. Pair with Mapei waterproofing membranes if moisture protection is needed, and explore our full Mapei product range.

If your project specifies Ardex self-leveling instead, we install that system with equal care. Both are premium products; the choice depends on your tile contractor's preference and warranty requirements.

Installation sequence

How Mapei Self-Leveling Gets Installed in Laval

  1. Assess substrate and product fit

We measure the substrate, identify high and low spots, and confirm with the tile contractor whether Ultraplan or Novoplan is the right choice for the target depth and floor tolerance.

  2. Grind and prime the slab

The concrete slab is diamond-ground to Mapei profile, dust and contaminants removed, and the Mapei primer applied. The primer cures before the SLU pour begins.

  3. Mix, pour, and level

Mapei SLU is mixed to the exact water ratio, poured across the floor, and allowed to self-level. The working window is tight; we move quickly to cover the area before the material sets.

  4. Cure and hand off

The poured slab cures per Mapei schedule. We verify final flatness against the tile spec, then the substrate is ready for the tile installer to begin their work.

Warranty coordination

Respecting the Tile Contractor's Mapei Specification

When a tile contractor puts Mapei on the spec sheet, they are protecting their warranty path. They know the Mapei system, they have installed tile over Mapei substrates before, and they want that same product on your project. We honor that specification completely.

If substrate damage or soft spots need repair before the SLU pour, we use Mapei repair products to patch and prepare. We also coordinate with other brand systems if your project mixes multiple product lines.

Common questions

Mapei SLU Questions, Answered

Ultraplan vs Novoplan, tile-trade warranty, primer and coordination.

Ultraplan for feather-to-moderate depth pours; Novoplan for thicker pours and structural-spec applications. We pick based on the substrate condition and target depth confirmed with the finish-flooring installer.
Because they trust the Mapei system warranty for their tile install on top, and they have install experience with the Mapei substrate. Honoring the spec keeps the tile-install warranty intact.
Yes. The Mapei primer is calibrated to the SLU chemistry; a generic primer or no primer voids the system warranty and risks delamination. We use the matched primer always.
Not typically; Mapei SLU is designed as substrate for finish flooring. For polished-as-finish projects, a different product family is the right call.
Per Mapei spec, typically within a day or two depending on product and depth. The tile installer's spec also matters; we coordinate the cure handoff with them.
