Permanent Color Into Stained Concrete Slabs

Stain reacts into the concrete itself, creating color that cannot peel or flake. Laval Concrete applies acid or water-based stain to new and existing commercial floors for lobbies, showrooms, dining areas, and feature zones where rich, variegated character matters. Every project includes a free written estimate and on-site stain test.

How stain works

Why Stained Concrete Outperforms Coatings

Coatings sit on top of concrete and eventually wear through. Stain penetrates or reacts into the slab itself, becoming part of the material. Acid stain undergoes a chemical reaction with the concrete's mineral content to form permanent color compounds. Water-based stain soaks deep into the pores without creating a surface film. Either way, the result is color that lives in the slab, not on it.

The variegated, mottled appearance that comes from natural concrete variation becomes a design feature rather than a liability. This makes stained concrete ideal for high-visibility commercial spaces: showrooms where vehicles or products need a striking backdrop, restaurant dining rooms where the floor contributes to ambiance, hotel lobbies where the entry sets the tone, and office reception areas where the concrete itself becomes part of the brand story.

Pair stained concrete with polished concrete finishing to amplify the color depth and add a protective layer. For broader design coordination, explore our decorative concrete options. When pattern or texture is the priority instead of color, stamped concrete delivers that visual impact.

The staining sequence

How Laval Concrete Stains Your Floor

  1. On-site stain sample

We apply the chosen stain to a small test area on your actual slab. This reveals how the color will react, the depth of the finish, and any prep adjustments needed before full-floor application. The test is your color guarantee.

  2. Slab surface preparation

The concrete is diamond-ground or chemically cleaned to strip old sealers, coatings, and contaminants. Open pores allow the stain to penetrate or react evenly across the entire floor. Existing damage is assessed and addressed.

  3. Stain application and reaction

Acid stain is applied in controlled stages and allowed to react with the concrete's minerals. Water-based stain is sprayed or rolled in multiple coats to build color saturation. Both methods produce the characteristic variegated appearance.

  4. Neutralize, polish, and seal

Acid stain is neutralized with a baking soda solution to stop the chemical reaction. The stained surface is polished to enhance depth and protected with a commercial-grade sealer. Maintenance intervals are documented at handoff.

Durability and maintenance

Stain Stays Put Because It's In the Concrete

Stain cannot peel, flake, or chip because there is no coating layer to fail. The color compounds are locked into the slab's structure through chemical reaction (acid) or deep penetration (water-based). Wear over decades shows as patina, not failure. This permanence is why stained concrete is chosen for high-traffic commercial spaces that need to look intentional for years.

Sealer protects the stained surface and amplifies the color's richness. In commercial settings, resealing every 2-3 years keeps the floor looking sharp and maintains the color saturation. Coordinate stained zones with adjacent polished concrete areas and integrate into your broader decorative concrete design for a cohesive finish.

Common questions

Commercial Stained Questions, Answered

Acid vs water stain, slab prep, color predictability and pairing with polish.

Acid stain produces deep variegated color through chemical reaction; results are unique to each slab and less predictable. Water-based stain gives more predictable color and a wider palette. We recommend based on the look you want and how much variability you embrace.
Mostly. The stain test on your actual slab gives a strong read of how the color will land at full scale. Some natural variability is part of the appeal; if you want exact-uniform color, a coating is the better tool.
Both, with the right prep. Existing slabs need diamond grind or chemical cleaning to remove old sealers and contaminants so the stain reaches the concrete. Old slabs with extensive damage may not stain evenly; we test first.
Yes, for protection and to bring out the color depth. Sealer reapplication every several years in commercial settings keeps the floor looking sharp and the color saturated.
Typically several days from prep through stain, neutralize, polish and seal. Larger floors stretch to weeks. The schedule is in the quote so you can plan around the work.
