Laval Garage Floors with Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield
EpoxyShield is the consumer-brand epoxy most Laval homeowners recognize from big-box stores. When applied by professionals using proper diamond grinding, matched primer, and full topcoat specification, the system performs as intended. DIY applications typically fail within months due to inadequate substrate preparation. We install EpoxyShield to manufacturer spec with warranty support.

The DIY problem
How Professional Installation Transforms EpoxyShield
The EpoxyShield kit sold at retail stores markets itself as a weekend project, but the actual performance hinges on substrate preparation that consumer tools cannot achieve. A garage slab treated with the included acid wash develops only a fraction of the bond strength that diamond grinding creates. The result: the epoxy adheres initially, looks acceptable for several months, then begins peeling in patches as the weak bond fails.
Our installation process starts with diamond grinding the slab to proper profile, removing all contaminants and addressing oil stains with appropriate chemistry. We then apply the matched Rust-Oleum primer (or upgrade if moisture or slab condition requires it), lay down the body coat at the correct film thickness, broadcast decorative flakes if selected, and finish with the full topcoat per Rust-Oleum specification. This sequence ensures the epoxy coating performs as the manufacturer designed it.
For heavier garage use, explore Rust-Oleum RockSolid as an upgrade option. See our full epoxy garage floor service for non-brand-specific options, and commercial epoxy flooring for industrial-grade applications.
Installation sequence
EpoxyShield Application Step by Step
-
Grind the slab to profile
The garage floor is diamond-ground to remove the top layer, eliminate contaminants, address any oil stains with appropriate chemistry, and create the proper surface profile for primer adhesion.
-
Prime the prepared surface
The Rust-Oleum primer (or upgraded primer if slab moisture or condition warrants) is applied uniformly across the ground surface, establishing the bond layer between the slab and the epoxy body coat.
-
Apply body coat with flakes
The EpoxyShield body coat is mixed to specification, applied at the correct film build thickness, and decorative flakes are broadcast at the proper loading if the homeowner has selected them for visual depth and slip resistance.
-
Seal with topcoat and cure
The Rust-Oleum topcoat is applied to seal the system, the floor cures to full strength, and we provide maintenance guidelines and return the garage ready for vehicle use.
The foundation of durability
Why Substrate Preparation Determines Success
The single most critical factor separating professional EpoxyShield installations from failed DIY attempts is substrate preparation. Diamond grinding creates a mechanical bond profile that epoxy can actually grip; acid etching (the DIY method) leaves a surface too smooth for lasting adhesion. This difference alone determines whether the coating lasts for years or begins lifting within months.
Once the slab is properly ground, the remaining steps (primer selection, film build, flake broadcast, topcoat application) all build on that foundation. Pair EpoxyShield with RockSolid if your garage sees heavy use, and review our full brand lineup for other coating options.

Homeowner questions
EpoxyShield Questions Answered
Substrate prep, DIY failure, decorative options, and longevity.
Tried EpoxyShield DIY two years ago, lifted in six months. Pros did it this time with diamond grind, hasn't lifted in three years. Substrate prep was the difference.
Coverage and finish way better than what I would have achieved DIY. The decorative flakes were broadcast evenly, no bald spots, looks like a real garage floor.
They handled the oil stains my DIY attempts could never get out. Slab came up clean, primer bonded, the epoxy went on perfectly. Worth the call.
Honest assessment that my garage's heavy use needed RockSolid instead of EpoxyShield. Did RockSolid; holding perfectly. Spec match matters.
